The Landscape Below Ground V 2023 Presenter
Nursery-grown trees often develop hidden root defects due to the constraints of container production. These defects—including poor lateral balance, girdling, and insufficient colonization—frequently lead to early tree mortality after planting, wasting resources and threatening the success of urban forestry and landscape projects. The financial, aesthetic, and environmental impact of early tree failure is substantial, yet the years of time lost can never be recovered.
Tree roots are not perfect, but...
ROOT DEFECTS KILL TREES
Current inspection methods are generally limited to above-ground assessments. As a result, tree root problems are out of sight and frequently overlooked. We address a critically unmet need for objective, scalable, noninvasive tree root inspection and diagnostics to enable urban trees to grow to maturity.
We need trees to live.
To live, we need trees.
INSIGHT™ by TreesROI™ is a revolutionary solution funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) SBIR Phase I project (January 2024–January 2025). It combines tree biology, biomechanics, and the geophysics of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) with AI/ML data science analytics and our Root Quality Classification Model to inspect and grade the quality of container-grown tree root systems. Among its outputs, INSIGHT™ provides actionable recommendations and data-driven predictions.

At TreesROI™, our mission is to improve the quality, value, benefits, and LIFESPAN of urban trees - the trees we grow where we live - with INSIGHT™.

It's time to end the
UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES
of container-grown trees.
It's time to
GROW BETTER TREES
